Eun-hee Ryu, who plays for the prestigious Hungarian club Gyori, won the 2023-2024 European Handball Confederation Champions League last month.
As the first Korean player to win the European Handball Confederation Champions League, Eun-hee Ryu joined the national team’s European training camp in early June without even resting for a few days and sweating bullets.
Born in 1990, this is Eun-hee Ryu’s fourth Olympics after London in 2012, Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and Tokyo in 2021.
He said, «I want to play in my last Olympics without any regrets» and «My goal is to help the team every moment I play on the court.»
Ryu Eun-hee chose the 2012 London Games, her debut, as her memorable Olympics.
She said, «It was my first competition, so I was excited and nervous, but I was able to think about my potential and realize my shortcomings while competing against European players» adding, «Through that, I learned more about the fun of handball.»
At that time, Korea, led by coach Kang Jae-won, advanced to the semifinals and finished in fourth place after a close match against Spain in overtime.
Since then, Korea’s women’s handball team was eliminated in the group stage in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and only made it to the quarterfinals in Tokyo in 2021.
The last Olympic medal was a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Ryu Eun-hee said, «Last year’s World Championship results were not good, and it is true that other countries do not value our abilities that highly anymore,» but expressed confidence by saying, «However, as we have gained experience in the World Championships, if we do not lose heart and bring out our full potential, I think we can achieve that result.»
Ryu Eun-hee said, «Our first goal is to advance to the quarterfinals,» and greeted the fans by saying, «Since there are many young players, we can get positive energy from each and every cheer from the fans, so I hope you will cheer for us with the same heart whether we do well or not.» |
