Смартфони відрізняються від звичайних мобільних телефонів наявністю достатньо розвиненої операційної системи, відкритої для розробки програмного забезпечення сторонніми розробниками.

Операційна система звичайних мобільних телефонів закрита для сторонніх розробників, а можливість установки на деякі телефони Java-додатків все одно не дозволяє таким додаткам в повній мірі керувати функціональними можливостями мобільного пристрою на рівні програмного забезпечення.

Встановлення додаткових програм дозволяє значно поліпшити функціональність смартфонів у порівнянні зі звичайними мобільними телефонами, розширюючи можливості смартфонів до рівня повноцінних мобільних комп’ютерів.
