Franck Muller shakes things up with new Grand Central Tourbillon Flash CX 36

Franck Muller, often called a master of complications, had a long-standing fascination with tourbillons. Designed to counteract the negative effects of gravity on the precision of a mechanical watch, the device is mesmerizing to watch as it performs a ballet-like rotation within the watch cage.

Franck Muller was a bold watchmaker whose interpretations of the tourbillon were always creative. It has the largest tourbillon ever built, the Giga Tourbillon, and created the revolutionary three-axis tourbillon. The tourbillon also appears in the manufacturer’s most complicated watch to date, one of a whopping 36 complications in the Aeternitas Mega.

For a complex device like a rotating tourbillon, it obviously needs to be front and center. Franck Muller does just that with its aptly named Grand Central Tourbillon, with its gravity-defying device located in the center of the dial. The Grand Central Tourbillon is the world’s first central tourbillon watch with a tonneau-shaped case.

This year, Franck Muller updated its central tourbillon watch with boldly colored hour markers (replacing the Arabic numerals of its predecessor) that contrast sharply with the micro-sandblasted matte black brass dial. Color options include dazzling orange, neon green and electric blue.

Using an ingenious “stacking” technique, the hands are placed around the central tourbillon cage, with the seconds hand indicated by a neon arrow on the tourbillon bridge. The CX case is made of carbon fiber and the bezel is made of black titanium. The sapphire crystal extends all the way to the lugs, giving the Curvex CX its most curved profile yet, thanks to a special technique that holds the glass at 12 and 6 o’clock. The watch comes on a matching neon nylon strap with a calfskin base.

Inside is the self-winding MVT FM CX 36T-CTR movement with a 4-day power reserve. The movement parts are decorated with many fine techniques such as circular graining, diamond polishing, and sunray brushing; especially the bridge plate is eye-catching due to its Geneva ripple decoration.
